Motherhood: Unfiltered ~ a photography series

This summer, I set out to do something different. Something special. Something really, really….real.

Many of you that I know personally will remember that I suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of my son, Henry, 3.5 years ago. You might also know that because of that experience, I started a blog and online community called the Good Mother Project. And if you are familiar with the Good Mother Project, you may be aware that it all started with a photography fundraiser for the Pacific Post Partum Support Society, where we took portraits of moms with their kids, holding signs with encouraging messages.

Motherhood Unfiltered

Photography has always been at the heart of the Good Mother Project, and showing women that they are good mothers, has always been at the heart of me and my photography.  So, it only seemed natural to continue to combine these two loves into another heart and soul project.

Introducing Motherhood: Unfiltered

In an age where social media and technology provide us with constant opportunities to take and retake photos, add filters, edit flaws and present an often unrealistic image of ourselves and our lives as mothers, we set out to create a series of real-life motherhood moments – without the filters, without the edits, but with all the beauty.

Twelve mothers and their children were chosen to participate in the series: Jess, Nancy, Carmel, Ashley, Jenn, Aimee, Christine, Liz, Andrea, Erin, Leigh Anne and Roberta. Each woman opened her home to me, sharing her story and her childrens’ stories, as I happily snapped away. Over the course of the next 12 days, these stories will be published here on my blog, and shared on the Good Mother Project as well.

This is Motherhood: Unfiltered ~

To view a selection of Motherhood: Unfiltered photographs in person, you can visit The Birch Tree in Ladner during their regular office hours.
