This is a picture of me and my son. Every year, on his birthday, we hold a quick photo session in my home studio. We play and goof around and get some cute shots of just him, but I always make sure that I get in the picture too.
I don’t particularly like how I look in the photos from this year. I didn’t have time to do my hair, and in fact, I was well overdo for highlights and a haircut. My make-up is blah. My hair looks a bit greasy. I’m not looking particularly “put together” and to be honest, I feel like I was a bit too goofy this time around.
But here’s the thing. My son doesn’t care.
He sees his mama. He sees the laughs, the tickles, the smiles, the cuddles, and yes, the goofiness that makes up his relationship with me, his mama.
The other day, my son’s daycare teacher asked me to bring in a photo of him & I for an art project. I kind of rolled my eyes and said “oh man, I don’t know that I have anything good.” The daycare teacher said, “That’s exactly what all the other moms are saying.” And it made me stop for a minute.
How are we not in photographs with our kids? Why is it hard for us to find a picture with us with our child?
We deserve to be in photos with our kids. And our kids deserve to have pictures with their mommy. They will treasure them as they get older, as we get older. They will seek out these pictures when they are grown up, when they are missing us, when they need to feel our love and support. These pictures will fill them with visceral memories of how we felt, how we laughed, how we talked to them and snuggled them.
We need to be in photos with our kids.
So for the next two months, I’m offering a special type of session, just for moms & their kids. These relaxed and casual “Me & My Mommy” sessions will take place in my natural-light, home studio in Tsawwassen. The setting is simple – just you and your kids. Come play, have fun, snuggle, and laugh together, and give your kids the gift of having a photo with their mom.
Sessions are available on weekdays only (late afternoon session times are available for those of you with kids in school), from now until May 31st. Each session is approximately 20 minutes long, and you’ll receive at least 8 retouched digital negatives, delivered to you in a private, online gallery. The session fee is $125 + GST, with $25 from each session being donated to the Pacific Post Partum Support Society.
If you’d like to book one of these special sessions for you and your kids, please email me. Space is limited so don’t delay.
