“Too often, parents give up their own personal passions when they have children. It is easy to put everyone else first when you are in the throes of diaper changes, school pick-ups and sport drop-offs. Where is the time you once had for yourself? You have to make the time. MomChoir is a dedicated kid-free zone for moms to meet other like-minded women who also share a passion for choir and singing.”
In the months after I had my son, I felt so lost. The life and the freedom that I had before I became a mother was suddenly gone. I loved my child with my whole heart, but I was mourning all those things in my life that I had enjoyed before his arrival – coffee dates with friends, sleeping 8 hours, showering, singing with my vocal ensemble, reading a book, driving by myself. It wasn’t just baby blues; it was post partum depression, and it took months of therapy and self-care to pull me out of it.
Part of that self-care was taking my mourning, lonely and frustrated self to rehearsals with the wonderful, supportive group of women that I sang with every week. Being with them was a huge part of my recovery because I was able to rediscover a part of myself that I thought I had lost.
That’s why I adore MomChoir. Each of the women in this group are taking the time each week to do something for themselves. They are embracing their passion for singing, and embracing each other at the same time. Because we all know it takes a village – but sometimes, it also takes a choir.
I couldn’t wait to photograph their very first concert in North Vancouver. It was emotional and wonderful and so SO good. If you love music and you love moms, you definitely need to follow this group and get to their next show.
