One of the most common questions couples planning a small wedding ask is how many hours of photography they actually need. When you’re not hosting a full-day, traditional wedding, the answer is often less than you think, and that can be incredibly freeing.
For intimate weddings and micro-weddings, realistic timelines matter far more than long ones. Smaller guest lists mean fewer moving parts, less waiting around, and more space for moments to unfold naturally. Instead of rushing from one location to the next, everything often happens in one place, which makes shorter photography coverage not only possible, but ideal.

As a micro-wedding photographer in BC, I specialize in weddings with shorter time frames. Many of my couples choose coverage starting at three hours, and are surprised by just how much can be beautifully documented in that window. With three hours, we can comfortably photograph any guests arriving, your ceremony, family formals, and still have a bit of time for relaxed, meaningful portraits of the two of you right on site, without the pressure of a packed schedule.
In some cases, even one to two hours is enough. This works especially well for elopements or very small gatherings where the focus is simply on the ceremony and a few intentional moments afterward. Shorter coverage keeps the day feeling simple and present, rather than overly structured or performative.
Choosing fewer hours of small wedding photography coverage isn’t about cutting corners; it’s about aligning your photography with the kind of day you’re actually planning. If your priority is connection, calm, and being fully present, a shorter timeline often supports that beautifully.
If you’re planning a wedding that’s intentionally small, know this: your day doesn’t need to be long to be meaningful, and your photos don’t need a full-day timeline to tell the story well. Sometimes, less really is more.
