There are a lot of family photographers out there. A lot of pretty portfolios, a lot of similar-looking websites, a lot of “book now” buttons. So how do you actually know who’s right for your family?
I’ve been doing this for over 12 years, and I’ve had a lot of conversations with parents who were nervous about picking wrong — spending money on a session that doesn’t feel like them, or worse, doesn’t feel like their kids. So here’s my honest take on what to actually pay attention to.
Look Past the Highlight Reel
Every photographer’s portfolio is going to show their best shots — that’s the point of a portfolio. But ask yourself: do these photos look like real families, or do they look like a catalog? Are the kids actually engaging with each other, or are they lined up and smiling on cue?
If every photo looks the same — same pose, same expression, same “everyone look at the camera” energy — that’s probably what your session will look like too. If you want something that feels like you, look for a portfolio with movement, real laughter, a little chaos.
Their Personality Matters More Than Their Gear
You’re not just hiring a camera. You’re hiring someone who’s going to spend an hour or two with your kids, and how they show up matters. Do they seem like someone your toddler would actually warm up to? Do they seem patient, or do they seem like they’re rushing through a checklist?
A quick call or email exchange before booking tells you a lot. If a photographer takes the time to actually answer your questions instead of just sending a price list, that’s usually a good sign of how they’ll treat your session too.
Ask How They Handle Real Kids
This is the big one. Anyone can photograph a calm, cooperative five-year-old. The real test is what happens when your kid is having a day. Ask directly: “What do you do if my child doesn’t want to participate?” or “How do you handle meltdowns?”
A photographer with real experience won’t be thrown by this question. They’ll have an answer, because they’ve been there — a lot. That experience is worth more than almost anything else on this list.
Location Experience Counts
If you’re shooting somewhere specific — Centennial Beach, a favourite park, your own backyard — it helps to work with someone who actually knows the location. They’ll know where the light is good at what time of day, where to avoid crowds, and how to make the most of the space without you having to think about any of it.
Trust Your Gut
At the end of all the research, the biggest indicator is usually the simplest one: how do you feel when you look at their work and talk to them? If you feel relaxed and excited, that’s your answer. If you feel like you have to convince yourself, keep looking.
The right photographer isn’t the one with the biggest following or the most polished branding — it’s the one who makes you feel like your family, exactly as it is, is worth photographing.
