Some evenings just work. The light does what it’s supposed to do, the tide cooperates, and the family in front of your camera is exactly the kind of fun you didn’t know you needed. That was Cheri’s session.

We shot at Centennial on one of those gorgeous July evenings where the light seems to stretch on forever, and honestly, within the first five minutes I couldn’t believe we hadn’t met before. Our sons are both 13, both play sports, both are only children — we had so much in common that the “getting to know you” small talk turned into genuine conversation almost immediately. That kind of easy connection changes a session. It always does.

This is the kind of shoot I hope for every single time: a little bit ridiculous, full of real laughter, and packed with candid moments that happened because the family was just being themselves — not because I posed them into it. Some of my favourite images from this whole year came out of this evening, and it’s not because of the light or the location (although, Centennial really did show up). It’s because Cheri’s family let their actual personalities take over, and that’s the stuff I live for behind the camera.
