There are some sessions that feel like work, and then there are sessions that are the COMPLETE opposite.
Candice is one of my favourite people. We met years ago through Delta Youth Theatre – our kids have shared the stage in quite a few productions – and along the way, we became the kind of friends who go on what we call “meat & potatoes” walks every couple of weeks. No agenda, no small talk. Just the good, the bad, and the ugly of whatever’s happening in our lives that month. Our walks always start with a big ol’ Candice hug. I’m not naturally a “huggy” person, but she doesn’t care – she hugs anyway. Because Candice is one of those rare friends who hugs you just because she loves you, no matter what.
It had been a long time since the Wilke family had photos taken together, but I wasn’t about to bug her about it. That’s not how our friendship works. But this summer, she finally saw the light – the sunset light, to be exact – and booked a session for late July. And holy smokes, did we luck out with the evening! Gorgeous light, warm air, and a family that was completely up for whatever silly prompt I threw at them.
Candice’s two teenage daughters are both talented singers and guitar players, and her husband clearly adores all of them women in his life – it shows in every frame. Knowing this family so well already made the session even more fun for me. I got to show them a side of my photography life they hadn’t seen before, and they were 100% good sports about it, which led to some genuinely adorable, laughter-filled photos.
But my favourite image from the whole evening has to be the one of Candice mid-laugh. It sums her up completely – beautiful, hilarious, fun, enthusiastic, carefree. That’s her, in one frame.
If it’s been a while since your family has photos together, consider this your sign. You don’t need a big reason. Sometimes the sunset light is reason enough.
