If summer has been so busy that you haven’t even thought about booking your fall photos, here’s your gentle nudge: fall is, hands down, my busiest season – and it’s not even close. Every year I watch my calendar fill up faster than any other time of year, and every year a few families email me in early November hoping there’s still a spot. Sometimes there is. Usually there isn’t.
Here’s why fall books up the way it does.
The colours and the light are unmatched
There’s a reason “fall photos” is basically its own genre. The warm, golden light, the rust and amber leaves, the crisp blue skies – it all adds up to a feel you just can’t recreate any other time of year. Fall has a coziness to it that translates beautifully into photos, and people know it. The second the leaves start turning, my inbox starts filling up too.
Everyone wants Christmas card photos

This is a big one. If you want a photo for your holiday cards, ornaments, or that “family update” you send out every December, fall is really your only window. Wait too long and you’re either rushing to edit and print in a panic, or skipping the cards altogether. Booking now means your photos are ready with plenty of breathing room before the holiday rush hits.
Fresh haircuts and back-to-school clothes just… work
There’s something about early fall – new haircuts, new school clothes, everyone looking a little more put-together than they did in the middle of summer – that photographs really well. Kids aren’t sunburnt or scraggly from three months of pool time, and that “new school year” polish carries over into photos in the best way.
Everyone is actually home
Summer is unpredictable. Between camps, cottages, and vacations, it can feel impossible to pin down a date where the whole family is actually in the same place at the same time. Fall solves that. Once the school year starts, routines settle, calendars stabilize, and suddenly it’s actually possible to get everyone together for an hour.

The weather cooperates (and the bugs disappear)
Anyone who’s done a summer session with me knows the mosquitoes are no joke. Fall gives us cooler, more comfortable temperatures without the bugs, the sweat, or the “can we please just get in the shade” pleas twenty minutes in. It’s easier on everyone (including me!) and it shows in the photos. People are more relaxed when they’re not swatting bugs mid-smile.
And a few more reasons, while we’re at it
- The scarcity is real. Fall has a short, specific window of peak colour – usually just a few weeks – so everyone is trying to book the same handful of weekends.
- It’s an easy “fresh start” moment. New school year, new season, new family photo – it just feels natural.
- Weekends are limited to begin with. I only shoot a certain number of sessions per weekend to make sure every family gets my full attention, which means the available spots disappear quickly once fall demand kicks in.
Where things stand right now
Real talk: my Fall Minis are on sale right now, and there are only 2 spots left. Once they’re gone, they’re gone – I don’t add more mini sessions once the sale wraps.
Family Sessions are going fast too. Almost all of my weekends between now and November are already booked, so if you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time to grab a spot before the calendar closes out.
If you want fall photos this year – for your walls, your Christmas cards, or just to have a record of this season of your family – I’d love to get you on the calendar before it’s too late.
