Golden Hour at Spanish Banks with Rachel’s Family
Spanish Banks gave us one of those golden summer evenings that felt like a perfect gift. Normally, I meet Rachel and her crew in Tsawwassen – often at Centennial Beach – but this year she took me up on my offer to do sessions in Vancouver while my son performed with Theatre Under the Stars. Since her family lives in the city, it was the perfect excuse to switch things up, and I’m so glad we did!
I’ve been photographing this family for many years, and the girls have become two of my biggest cheerleaders. They genuinely love photo day, and I love photographing them right back! Rachel’s youngest always arrives buzzing with silly energy, ready with jokes, twirls, and dramatic leaps. Her big sister is thoughtful and sweet, the steady anchor who eventually gets swept into the giggles. Watching the two of them together – such good buddies, such different spirits – is pretty darn special.
It was a Monday night, but the beach was packed with families, friend groups, and volleyball players enjoying the summer evening. We did a bit gentle dodging to avoid the background photobombers but managed to find quiet areas of sand and driftwood with trees and ocean framing them behind. Dad, with his quiet, understated humour, as always was game for anything – goofy faces, tickle fights, you name it. And Rachel, kind and warm as ever, beamed at her girls in that way only a proud mom can.
The session felt exactly like them: fun and a little goofy, with soft, sweet moments tucked in between. Spanish Banks gave us the glow; this family brought the sparkle. I can’t wait to work with them again!
