Every year, the promotional photo shoot for Delta Youth Theatre becomes one of my favourite traditions, and this year’s The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition session was no exception. Hard to believe this is the 13th DYT show I’ve photographed! My very first was all the way back in 2019 for Mary Poppins Jr., and I’ve had the joy and privilege of capturing every production since.

If you’ve ever wondered what these sessions are like, picture this: my home transformed into a whirlwind of costumes, kids, hair and make-up, props scattered everywhere, music from the show blasting, and energy levels through the roof. It’s wonderfully chaotic.

This year, all four casts brought their SpongeBobs, Patricks, and Sandys through my front door. I photographed every combination you can imagine: all three characters together, SpongeBob and Patrick duos, and each character individually striking their best poses. It’s always such a treat to get this early sneak peek as the kids start slipping into character – character voices emerge, poses get sillier or braver, and you can feel the show coming alive right in front of the camera. And of course, no DYT photo day would be complete without my cats zooming through the background, occasionally attempting a cameo.

By the end of the day, we always end up with an amazing collection of images that fuel the social media excitement leading up to opening night. It’s busy, a little chaotic, and absolutely bursting with fun – just the way a youth theatre photo shoot should be.
