There are some families who feel like part of my photography journey, and Kimiko’s crew is definitely one of them. We go all the way back to my pre-photography days, when we worked together at a local non-profit. Years later, in 2017, she booked a holiday mini session with me – her daughter was just a baby back then – and we’ve been doing annual sessions ever since. Watching her family grow has been one of those unexpected joys that makes this job so special.
Every fall, I know I’m going to get at least one session that’s guaranteed to be fun, relaxed, and full of laughs—and that’s the one with Kimiko, her husband, and their two kids. This year, they brought along their incredibly sweet dog, Merle, who absolutely stole the show. (Check out the photo where Merle sticks her tongue out directly at the camera – I promise you, it’s perfection!)
Her kids crack me up every single time. They’re hilarious, full of personality, and somehow manage to flip instantly into “mini model mode” the moment a camera is pointed at them. Whether they’re coordinating poses or bursting into giggles between shots, they make my job so easy.
What I love most about photographing this family is how effortless it always feels. They show up ready to have fun, ready to be themselves, and ready to let me capture all the little moments that make them who they are. It’s comforting and familiar in the best possible way, like catching up with old friends who just happen to take great photos.
I’m already looking forward to next year. With this bunch, it’s impossible not to.
