When I first started out as a photographer over 14 years ago, I never imagined I’d end up working almost exclusively with kids and families. My early dreams were all about baby bump portraits, trash-the-dress sessions, and quirky, stylized headshots. Then something surprising happened: every time a family with kids came my way, the session just… worked. I realized I had a knack for getting kids to open up, relax, and actually enjoy themselves. And once you find a little magic like that, you lean into it.
So what’s my secret? Honestly, it’s simple: I talk to kids like they’re real people. Not accessories to the session. Not props to pose. Actual humans who deserve to be included, listened to, and given a bit of ownership over the experience. Kids feel that in an instant. When they realize their ideas matter and they’re allowed to have opinions, their shoulders drop, their personalities shine, and suddenly we’re creating real moments instead of forced ones.

Of course, a little fun goes a long way too. Over the years, I’ve built a gigantic repertoire of games, prompts, and playful tasks – close to 70 ideas that I rotate through to fit the family, the light, and the vibe of the moment. Many of my regular families already know some of my favourites: “5 Nice, 5 Silly,” the parent booty shake, the family squish… trust me, if you know, you know! In fact, I’m actually putting together an online resource for fellow photographers with my full collection of prompts because at this point, I consider this my specialty.
Worried your child might not do well during a session? Maybe they’re on the autism spectrum, maybe they’re shy, maybe you’re unsure how they’ll respond. I’ve worked with kids of all abilities, personalities, and sensory needs. My approach stays the same: meet them where they are. Kids just want to be respected as individuals, and I’m all in – as long as you are too.

A few tips for parents:
– let go of the idea of perfect. Often the most “perfect” photos come from imperfect moments
– let your photographer (hi!) guide the flow. I’ve done this a zillion times and I promise that we’ll aim to grab all the important shots.
– be willing to get a little silly yourself. Kids LOVE this and nothing makes a child laugh more than their mom or dad being a bit of a goofball.
– please, please, please – don’t yell “smile!” – trust me on that one. I’ve got tricks up my sleeve to get real, authentic smiles from pretty much any kid.
– and absolutely bring bribes. Snacks, stickers, gummy bears… they work (and everyone does this – it’s nothing to be embarrassed about!)
