Why Wild Kids at a Photo Shoot Is Actually a Good Thing | Vancouver Family Photographer

Picture this: you’ve carefully dressed your kids, packed snacks, and arrived at your photo session with big hopes and Pinterest-perfect dreams. And then – chaos. One kid is running around with a stick, another is making fart noises, someone’s sock has disappeared, and you’re desperately thinking, “please just smile one time!” Deep breath. Here’s the truth: that chaos? It’s actually gold.

Perfection Is Overrated – Personality Isn’t

The best family photos are the ones that feel like your family. A perfectly posed portrait is nice, but the photos you’ll love years from now are the ones bursting with laughter, movement, and a little bit of mayhem. When your kids are being their unfiltered, goofy, curious selves, that’s when their true personalities shine, and that’s what makes the magic happen.

Wild Moments = Real Memories

Let’s be honest, “calm” doesn’t usually describe kids. And that’s okay! The squeals, the twirls, the impromptu dance moves – they bring life to your photos. When I see kids racing around or collapsing into giggles, I’m silently cheering inside because I know those are the frames that tell your story. A photo of your toddler mid-giggle or your teen giving a heroic piggyback ride? Way better than a forced grin.

Let Them Lead the Way

In my world, kids rule – at least for a forty-five minutes to an hour. We chase light, play games, tell bad jokes, toss leaves in the air, and see what happens next. I’ll guide when needed, but the best moments almost always come when we let the kids take the creative reins for a little bit. Sometimes that’s a spontaneous tickle fight, sometimes it’s a nap-on-Dad’s-shoulder moment. Either way, those unscripted bursts of personality are where the magic lives.

You’re Not Just Getting Photos – You’re Collecting Stories

A family session isn’t a performance; it’s an experience. It’s messy, funny, sweet, and uniquely yours. Years from now, when you look back at your gallery, you’ll remember the wild energy, the laughter, the way your kids were in that fleeting stage of life.

So, next time your child is squirming, roaring, or running in circles mid-photo, just roll with it. Those big feelings and tiny adventures are what make your family’s story beautiful. Let them be wild and I’ll handle the rest. And trust me, the results will be even better than what you imagined.
