Every spring, I look forward to one of my favourite assignments of the year – meeting up with Delta Youth Theatre to capture the magic before it hits the stage. This season, I had the joy of photographing promotional images for not one, but two upcoming productions: Into the Woods Jr. and Seussical Jr.
The shoot featured eight talented local youth actors bringing some truly iconic characters to life. From a mischievous Little Red Riding Hood and a lurking Wolf, to the gentle giant Horton and the one-and-only Cat in the Hat – the energy and commitment these kids brought in front of the camera was nothing short of impressive. (And yes, each character is played by two different actors – both shows feature dual casts, which means double the talent on stage.)
What makes these images so fun to create is the material I have to work with. Shot against a clean white backdrop, we get to focus on the vibrancy of the costumes and characters – and DYT consistently goes all-in on that front. But honestly, the kids are the real story. These performers have been rehearsing since January, and it shows. There’s a confidence and playfulness in front of the lens that you can’t manufacture.
Into the Woods Jr. opens this Friday May 1st and runs all weekend. Seussical Jr. follows the next weekend, opening on May 8th. Tickets are just $28, and both shows are absolutely worth your time. If you have young theatre fans in your life – or if you just love a beautifully produced show – don’t miss either of these.
