Every year, one of my absolute favourite things I get to do is photograph headshots for Delta Youth Theatre. This spring, I spent time in my home studio over February and March doing 19 sessions with the young actors who are performing in DYT’s two spring productions — Into the Woods Jr. (May 1–3) and Seussical Jr. (May 8–10). And a handful of these talented kids are pulling double duty, performing in both!

Funny enough, DYT headshots are actually how I first got connected with the company. I’ve since taken on a part-time administrator role with them, and I honestly couldn’t be more grateful for that relationship. What DYT does for young performers in this community is something truly special. I never had access to theatre at this level when I was growing up – the production quality, the coaching, the experience these kids get? I’m genuinely floored by it every single time.

But the headshot sessions themselves – that’s where I get something I don’t really get anywhere else: one-on-one time with each of these awesome young people. Some of them walk in and you just know they are Theatre Kids – full stop – performing from the moment they step through the door. Others are quiet and a little unsure, but then you watch them onstage and your jaw drops.

I love hearing about their favourite musicals, their performance dreams, the moment in the show they can’t wait for audiences to see. Every single session leaves me smiling.
