Ooooooh, this was a fun one for me! A totally unique request came into my inbox back in July – would I be willing to take a day trip over to Galiano Island to photograph a surprise engagement? OF COURSE I WOULD!
Galiano Island is one of my favourite places in BC – so gorgeous and laidback – so I welcomed the opportunity to zip over there for this truly special occasion. Thankfully, the weather that day was absolutely stunning so when I set out for the ferry terminal, I was really excited! I had never met this couple before, but Philip (the one proposing) had given me a brief description of them and their dog. Imagine the serendipity – I actually ended up being parked RIGHT behind them at the ferry terminal. His girlfriend (soon-to-be fiancée) had no idea what was in store for them this weekend, so I kept myself incognito, both at the ferry terminal and on the ferry.
I ended up arriving at the stunning white shell beach on Galiano at exactly the same time as them (foiling my plan to be there before them, in hopes of keeping up the ruse), but I played the part of an hobbyist photographer, snapping photos of the sunset and the gorgeous setting. When Philip headed off for a moment with their dog, I knew this was my cue. He returned a few moments later, pup in tow, sporting a ring box around its collar. All of these beginning moments are candid and captured right at the proposal was happening.
After she said “yes!” there was time for some introductions and posed photos, plus a chance to enjoy the truly spectacular sunset. It really was an absolutely perfect moment, and although I was able to capture some really beautiful images, I was sad to leave to catch my ferry home.
It was a whirlwind afternoon and evening but one I won’t soon forget! Thank you to Philip for inviting me to be a part of this amazing moment!
