If you’ve ever looked at a sunset photo and thought how – golden light, glowing skin, the whole world looking like it was lit by magic – here’s the honest answer: that light only exists for about twenty minutes, and it happens right before the sun disappears.
Which, in a BC summer, is late.
Near the summer solstice in June and early July, the sun doesn’t set until after 9 pm. That means your session might start at 8:30. I know. I can already hear you doing the mental math on bedtimes. But stick with me, because I promise this is worth it.
The Light Does Something You Can’t Fake

Golden hour light is warm, soft, and directional in a way that no studio setup can replicate. It wraps around little faces. It turns ordinary beach moments into something timeless. You can edit brightness and contrast, but you cannot manufacture that quality of light. You have to show up for it.
The Beach Becomes a Completely Different Place
If you’ve been to Centennial Beach on a July afternoon, you know the scene — full parking lot, busy shoreline, kids and dogs and volleyballs everywhere. By 8:30 pm? The crowds have cleared. The water calms down. There’s space to actually be there. Your family gets the beach mostly to yourselves, and that changes everything about how a session feels.
Tired Kids Have a Surprising Kind of Energy

I know this sounds backwards, but hear me out: a tired child is often a real child. The performance mode drops. The careful smiles go out the window. What you get instead is the giggling, the running, the silly faces, the spontaneous hugs. I’m not here to capture everyone looking perfectly at the camera — I’m here to capture your family as it actually is. That tends to come out beautifully in the last hour of the day.
As Summer Goes On, It Gets a Little Easier
By August, sunset creeps earlier — closer to 8:30 pm — which means sessions can start around 7:30 or even 8:00. Still an evening, but a bit more manageable for younger kids and early-rising families.
The Payoff Is Real
You will look at these photos for decades. Your kids will see themselves – sandy, a little wild-haired, lit up gold – and they won’t remember being tired. They’ll just see the magic. And so will you.
Worth it? Every single time.

Sunset sessions at Centennial Beach are available through mid-June with select evening sessions offered throughout the summer. Find all the details here.
